about

Almost everything you are hearing was performed on a classical guitar (except the synth and bass) We bowed guitar strings to create the undulating swells in the background. Vocals were performed into an amplified guitar body, and the percussion was created through various string crossing techniques played on a midi sampler.

Programme Notes:

This is a sonic depiction of the events that occurred on November 20th 2019 at York University, which made national headlines. On this day Palestinian students and our allies peacefully demonstrated the members of the Israeli Occupation Forces speaking, spreading pro-occupation and pro-apartheid propaganda. This is the same force which is responsible for a plethora of war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and is considered to be administering apartheid by the leading Israeli human rights organization, Bt'selem. To see for yourself, watch Abby Martin's film "Gaza Fights for Freedom". Many of the protestors have been personally afflicted by the occupation of Palestine, and some have had family killed. We held up photos of children murdered by the occupation forces, to which event attendees and apartheid apologists laughed at. Known fascist gangs such as the JDL attended, and beat protestors, concussing one student.

What stands out to me about demonstrations like this is the musicality of the rally. Simple, repetitive chants are sung together in rhythmic unison, and they flow in and out of each other. There is really no musical parallel to the power and energy this music commands. The idea of looping, and layering more and more simple melodies on top of each other naturally flowed from this, and by the end of the composition, with the sounds of screaming, trash cans, noise and chaos, this is what November 20th still sounds like in my memories.
